Crude protein tells you what's in the bag, not what your rabbit can use. Protein is built from 22 amino acids; miss one and the chain can't complete — the rest is wasted, excreted as ammonia (litter box odor, and over time urinary sludge).

Grain and soy are short on a couple of those amino acids, so grain-based formulas pile on total protein to look competitive — a 16% label nets roughly 5–6% usable.
